Why does my AC smell musty when it starts?

A musty startup smell usually means mold or mildew is growing somewhere in the system — most often on the damp evaporator coil, in a partially clogged condensate pan or drain, on a dirty filter, or inside the ductwork. The odor is strongest at startup because the first blast of air pushes accumulated spores and stale moisture into the rooms.

Why air conditioners grow mildew

An AC's indoor coil is cold and wet by design — it condenses humidity out of the air all summer. That dark, damp environment is exactly what mold likes, and any dust that sticks to the coil or sits in the drain pan becomes food. Humid Pennsylvania summers keep the whole assembly moist for months, and when the system has been off for hours, growth gets ahead of airflow. The result is the classic "dirty sock" or basement smell each time the blower kicks on.

What a homeowner can check safely

  • Pull the filter — a damp, gray, or smelly filter should be replaced immediately
  • Look at the condensate drain outlet for slow dripping or standing water backup
  • Check accessible vents and returns for visible dust mats or dark staining
  • Run the fan in On mode briefly after cooling cycles to help the coil dry
  • Note whether the smell is musty rather than burning or rotten — those point to different problems

Smells that mean something more serious

A burning or electrical odor calls for shutting the system down, and a sulfur or rotten-egg smell in a gas-equipped home means leaving the house and calling the gas utility before anyone investigates. Musty odors are not an emergency in the same way, but breathing moldy air aggravates allergies and asthma, so it should not be left to linger.

Fixing it for good

A technician can clean the evaporator coil, flush and treat the condensate system, and inspect the ducts; professional duct cleaning clears growth and dust the system keeps recirculating. PJ MAC HVAC tackles musty AC systems and duct cleaning jobs with 24/7 availability whenever you need a hand.
