A ductless mini-split solves a problem that conventional central air cannot: conditioning a space where there is no ductwork and no practical way to add it. In a region full of stone Main Line houses, Philadelphia rowhomes with no chase space, converted attics, additions and finished garages, that describes a great many rooms.

When ductless is genuinely the better answer
We would rather tell you a mini-split is the wrong choice than sell you one. It is the right choice in a fairly specific set of situations:
- ✓Older homes with no ductwork, where running conventional duct means losing closet space on every floor
- ✓Additions and bonus rooms where the existing system had no spare capacity to give — the most common cause of a room that has never been comfortable
- ✓Converted attics, garages and basements that were never part of the original conditioned envelope
- ✓Rooms with loads very different from the rest of the house — a sunroom, a home office full of equipment, a top-floor bedroom under a hot roof
- ✓Homes on radiator or baseboard heat where there is no air distribution to add cooling to at all
- ✓Spaces where one person wants a different temperature than the rest of the household
Where a home already has sound ductwork and a system that simply needs replacing, conventional central air is usually the better value. And where the complaint is a room the existing duct serves badly, the honest first step is examining that duct — duct repair and sealing is frequently cheaper than adding equipment.
The addition problem, specifically
This is the single most common reason we install mini-splits. A homeowner adds a room, the contractor extends the nearest trunk to serve it, and the existing system had nothing spare. The new space is uncomfortable from the first season and the rooms nearest the extension get worse too, because the airflow that used to serve them is now being shared.
A mini-split resolves that cleanly by taking the new space off the central system entirely, which usually improves the original rooms at the same time. It is one of the few situations where adding equipment fixes two complaints at once.
Sizing and zone count
Mini-splits are more sensitive to oversizing than conventional systems, not less. An oversized head satisfies the room quickly, shuts down, and never runs long enough to remove humidity — leaving a space that is cold and clammy and cycling constantly. The efficiency advantage of inverter equipment comes precisely from running at low output for long periods, which an oversized unit never does.
We size on the actual room load. On multi-zone systems there is a further decision: one outdoor unit serving several heads is tidier and usually cheaper, but it couples the zones together and means a single outdoor failure takes out every room. Separate single-zone systems cost more and fail independently. Which is right depends on how the spaces are used, and we will explain the trade-off rather than defaulting to whichever is simpler to quote.
Installation quality is most of the outcome
Mini-splits are reliable when installed properly and troublesome when they are not, and the failure points are consistent. The line set has to be evacuated properly before charging; flare connections have to be made and torqued correctly; the condensate has to drain with real fall, because most indoor heads rely on gravity and a head mounted without adequate pitch will eventually drip down the wall.
Head placement matters as much. A unit mounted where the airflow is blocked by a beam, a door swing or furniture will underperform no matter how well it was sized. We plan placement with you rather than putting the head where the line set is easiest to run.
Heat pumps, and what to expect in a Pennsylvania winter
Most mini-splits sold now are heat pumps and provide heating as well as cooling. Modern cold-climate units hold useful capacity well below freezing, which makes them viable as primary heat in a well-insulated space and as supplementary heat almost anywhere in this region.
What is worth being clear about: capacity does fall as outdoor temperature drops, and in a poorly insulated space a mini-split sized for cooling may not carry the heating load in the coldest weeks. If you intend to heat with it, say so at the estimate, because that changes the sizing.
Repair, service and maintenance
We service ductless systems as well as install them, including units we did not install. The recurring issues are a blocked condensate drain producing water down the wall, a filthy indoor filter or blower wheel — mini-split filters need cleaning far more often than owners expect, and a fouled blower wheel quietly destroys the capacity of the unit — and refrigerant leaks at flare connections that were not made properly.
Ductless equipment needs annual maintenance the same as any other system, and the indoor coil and blower wheel are the parts that matter. A mini-split that has lost its cooling is very often clogged rather than broken.

Is a mini-split right for my house?
It is the right answer where there is no ductwork and no practical way to add it, for additions and converted spaces the existing system cannot serve, and for rooms with loads very different from the rest of the house. Where you already have sound ductwork, conventional central air is usually better value — and where one room is served badly by existing duct, repairing that duct is often cheaper than adding equipment.
Can a mini-split heat my house in winter?
Most are heat pumps and modern cold-climate units hold useful capacity well below freezing. Capacity does fall as it gets colder, though, so a unit sized only for cooling may not carry the heating load in the coldest weeks of a poorly insulated space. Tell us at the estimate if you intend to heat with it, because it changes the sizing.
Is one outdoor unit with several heads better than separate systems?

Why is water dripping down the wall under my indoor unit?
Almost always the condensate drain. Most indoor heads drain by gravity, so a unit mounted without adequate fall, or with a blocked drain line, will eventually leak down the wall. It is a common installation fault and it is fixable.
My mini-split has stopped cooling well. Is it broken?
Frequently it is clogged rather than broken. Mini-split filters need cleaning far more often than owners expect, and a fouled blower wheel quietly destroys the unit's capacity. We service ductless systems including ones we did not install.
