Where ductless wins in a rowhome
Third-floor conversions are the clearest case. A finished attic or top floor is almost always the hardest space in a rowhome to condition — it sits under the roof, the supply run reaching it is the longest in the house, and the existing system rarely had capacity to spare when the space was finished. A dedicated mini-split takes that floor off the central system entirely, which usually improves the floors below at the same time.
The other strong cases are homes on radiator or baseboard heat with no air distribution at all, rear kitchen extensions that were never properly served, and basement conversions.
The outdoor unit problem
This is where rowhome installations succeed or fail. The condenser has to go somewhere with real airflow, and rowhome options are limited to a small rear yard, a flat roof, or occasionally a side alley. Each has consequences.
A rear-yard unit boxed in by fencing on three sides recirculates its own hot discharge and underperforms permanently. A roof-mounted unit avoids that but needs proper support, vibration isolation and a safe route for the line set and condensate. We plan placement with you rather than putting it wherever the line set runs easiest, because moving it later is expensive.
Party walls and noise
In a rowhome your outdoor unit sits close to at least one neighbour's living space, and often close to your own bedroom window. Inverter equipment is considerably quieter than older fixed-speed condensers, but placement and mounting still matter — a unit bolted directly to a party wall transmits vibration into the structure next door.
It is worth getting right at installation. It is a difficult conversation to have afterwards.
Repair and service
We service ductless systems including ones we did not install. The recurring faults are a blocked condensate drain producing water down an interior wall, a filthy indoor filter or blower wheel quietly destroying capacity, and refrigerant leaks at flare connections that were not made properly at installation.
A mini-split that has stopped cooling well is very often clogged rather than broken.

Water is running down the wall under my indoor unit.
That is the condensate drain. Most indoor heads drain by gravity, so a unit mounted without adequate fall or with a blocked line will leak down the wall. It is a common installation fault and it is fixable.
Do you service units you did not install?
Yes, on all major brands — condensate faults, refrigerant leaks at flare connections, and cleaning of the indoor coil and blower wheel, which is what most 'failed' mini-splits actually need.
