How often should HVAC systems be serviced?

Twice a year is the standard: a cooling tune-up in spring and a heating tune-up in fall, so each system is checked before its season of heavy work. Heat pumps, which run year-round, follow the same twice-yearly rhythm. Between professional visits, the homeowner's job is simple but important: change filters regularly and keep outdoor units clear of debris.

What a seasonal tune-up actually covers

Professional maintenance is more than a filter swap. A cooling visit typically includes cleaning the condenser coil, verifying refrigerant charge, testing capacitors and contactors, flushing the condensate drain, and measuring temperature drop across the coil. A heating visit covers burner and flame-sensor cleaning, heat exchanger inspection, safety-control testing, ignition system checks, and combustion verification, with the heat exchanger inspection doubling as a carbon monoxide safeguard. Each visit catches parts that are drifting out of spec before they fail outright.

Why the schedule pays for itself

  • Fewer mid-season breakdowns, since most failures show early warning signs a technician can spot
  • Lower energy use, because clean coils and correct charge restore lost efficiency
  • Longer equipment life, with less strain on compressors, motors, and exchangers
  • Safety verification for fuel-burning equipment every single year
  • Manufacturer warranties often require documented professional maintenance

The homeowner's share of the work

Between visits, check the filter monthly during heavy-use seasons and replace it when it looks loaded, keep a couple of feet of clearance around the outdoor unit, and make sure supply and return vents stay open and unblocked. Note anything odd, including new noises, smells, or longer run times, and mention it at the next tune-up so the technician can chase it down. PJ MAC HVAC, family owned and operated, performs maintenance and tune-ups on all brands, including Lennox, Carrier, Trane, and Goodman, drawing on 32+ years in the trade.

If something fails between tune-ups, PJ MAC HVAC is there at any hour, 24/7, every day of the year.
