Can I run my AC and furnace with the same thermostat?
Yes — that is the standard setup. Most central systems pair the furnace and air conditioner through one thermostat, which switches between Heat and Cool modes and shares the furnace blower to move air for both. The thermostat just needs the right wiring and compatibility for your equipment, including heat pumps or multi-stage systems, which use additional control wires.
How one thermostat controls both systems
In a typical split system, the air conditioner's indoor coil sits on top of the furnace, and the furnace blower pushes air across whichever one is active. The thermostat is simply the switchboard: one set of wires calls for heat, another energizes the outdoor condenser, and a fan wire runs the blower. Setting the mode to Heat or Cool tells the thermostat which call to make, and Auto changeover modes on many thermostats will switch between the two on their own.
When wiring and compatibility get more involved
- ✓Heat pumps need a reversing-valve wire and often controls for backup heat
- ✓Two-stage or variable-speed equipment uses extra conductors for staging
- ✓Many smart thermostats require a C (common) wire for constant power
- ✓Boilers and ductless mini-splits typically use separate controls rather than the central thermostat
- ✓Homes with zoning panels route thermostat signals through a control board
What homeowners can check safely
If one mode works and the other does not, confirm the thermostat mode and setpoint, check its batteries, and make sure the furnace switch and the AC breaker are on. Beyond that, leave the wiring alone — miswired thermostats can blow low-voltage fuses or damage control boards, and heat pump wiring errors can quietly run heating and cooling against each other.
