How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
The telltale signs: clothes take two or more cycles to dry, the dryer and laundry room feel unusually hot, a burning smell appears during cycles, the outside vent flap barely opens or shows no airflow, and lint collects around the dryer or vent hood. A clogged vent is a genuine fire hazard — lint is highly flammable — so these symptoms deserve prompt attention.
Why clogged dryer vents are dangerous
Every load sheds lint, and the screen inside the dryer only catches part of it. The rest travels through the exhaust duct, where it snags on ridges, elbows, and screens until airflow chokes off. Restricted exhaust traps heat inside the drum and duct, and dryer fires often start exactly this way. Blocked vents also make gas dryers vent combustion byproducts poorly, which is one more reason not to ignore the symptoms.
Symptoms worth acting on
- ✓Towels and jeans still damp after a full cycle
- ✓Dryer exterior or laundry room noticeably hot while running
- ✓Burning or scorched smell during operation
- ✓Outside flap that does not open, or weak airflow at the hood
- ✓Visible lint around the vent hood, hose connections, or behind the machine
- ✓The dryer shutting off mid-cycle on thermal overload
What you can do yourself
Clean the lint screen before every load, pull the dryer out occasionally to vacuum behind it, check that the flex connector is not crushed against the wall, and step outside while the dryer runs to confirm strong, warm airflow at the hood. Avoid plastic or foil duct in favor of rigid metal where possible.
When to schedule professional cleaning
Long duct runs, multiple elbows, and roof terminations are nearly impossible to clear with household tools; professional cleaning uses rotary brushes and powered airflow to scour the full length. Annual cleaning is a sensible rhythm for most homes, sooner for heavy laundry households. PJ MAC HVAC provides dryer vent cleaning and takes calls around the clock when something seems unsafe.
