Ductless Mini-Split
A ductless mini-split is a heat pump system that conditions rooms without ductwork. A compact outdoor unit connects through a small wall penetration to one or more indoor heads, each cooling and heating its own zone. Mini-splits suit additions, older homes without ducts, and rooms that ducted systems can't reach.
How mini-splits work without ducts
A mini-split moves the air handler into the room. The outdoor unit houses an inverter-driven compressor; insulated refrigerant lines, a power cable, and a condensate drain run through a roughly three-inch wall opening to one or more indoor units — wall-mounted heads, ceiling cassettes, or low floor consoles. Each indoor head contains its own coil and quiet fan and conditions only its space, with its own remote or thermostat. Multi-zone systems connect several heads to one outdoor unit, giving room-by-room control. Because there are no ducts, there are no duct losses, which is part of why mini-splits post very high SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings.
Modern mini-splits are full heat pumps: most heat as well as cool, and cold-climate models keep producing heat in single-digit temperatures.
Where mini-splits make sense in Greater Philadelphia housing
The region is full of homes that ducted systems struggle with: stone houses on the Main Line built before ductwork existed, Philadelphia rowhomes with no chase space, finished attics and basements, sunrooms, and additions the original system never accounted for. A mini-split conditions these spaces without tearing open walls or sacrificing closets to duct runs. They also rescue third floors that bake every summer while the rest of the house stays comfortable. Placement of indoor heads, line-set routing, and correct sizing per zone determine how well the finished system performs, so installation quality matters as much as brand. PJ MAC HVAC installs ductless mini-splits throughout the area and offers free estimates for sizing out a single room or a whole-house multi-zone system.
