MERV Rating
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how effectively an air filter captures particles, on a scale from 1 to 16 for residential and commercial filters. Higher MERV numbers trap smaller particles like fine dust, pollen, and smoke, but denser filters also restrict airflow more, so ratings must match the system.
What the MERV scale actually measures
MERV comes from an ASHRAE test that challenges a filter with particles in three size ranges, from large dust down to fine particles between 0.3 and 1 micron. The rating reflects the filter's worst-case capture efficiency. In broad strokes: MERV 1-4 covers basic fiberglass filters that mainly protect the equipment; MERV 5-8 captures mold spores, pollen, and dust-mite debris; MERV 9-12 adds finer dust and some pet dander particles; MERV 13-16 captures a significant share of smoke, bacteria-sized particles, and the fine aerosols associated with viruses. MERV 13 is the level often recommended for improved indoor air quality where the system can handle it.
The catch is pressure drop. Tighter media resists airflow, and a one-inch MERV 13 filter slot can choke a blower that was designed around a cheap fiberglass pad. Thick media cabinets (4-5 inch filters) achieve high MERV with far less restriction because they hold much more pleated surface area.
Choosing a filter for your system, not just your allergies
For homeowners around Philadelphia dealing with spring pollen, city dust, or pets, the instinct to buy the highest-MERV filter on the shelf is understandable — but the right answer depends on your blower and filter slot. A reasonable approach: use the highest MERV your system tolerates without airflow symptoms (longer run times, whistling, frozen AC coil), change it on schedule, and consider a media cabinet upgrade if you want MERV 13 performance. A technician can measure static pressure to confirm what your system can support.
