SEER2 Rating
SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) measures how efficiently an air conditioner or heat pump cools over a typical season, calculated as cooling output divided by electrical energy consumed under the M1 test procedure adopted in 2023. Higher SEER2 numbers indicate lower electricity use for the same cooling.
How SEER2 works and why it replaced SEER
SEER2 is the federal efficiency metric that took effect on January 1, 2023, replacing the older SEER standard. Both compare a system's total seasonal cooling output (in BTUs) to the electricity it consumes (in watt-hours), but SEER2 uses the updated M1 test procedure, which raises the external static pressure during testing to better reflect how real ductwork restricts airflow. Because the test is tougher, SEER2 numbers run slightly lower than the old SEER numbers for the same equipment — a unit formerly rated 14 SEER is roughly 13.4 SEER2.
Pennsylvania sits in the federal North region, where new split-system central air conditioners must meet a minimum of 13.4 SEER2. High-efficiency systems reach the high teens and beyond, usually by pairing variable-speed compressors and blowers that run longer at lower power instead of cycling hard on and off.
What SEER2 means when replacing an AC in Southeastern PA
When a Philadelphia-area cooling system is past repair, the SEER2 rating is one of the main levers on future operating cost. Things worth weighing:
- ✓A higher SEER2 unit costs more upfront but uses less electricity every summer it runs
- ✓Real-world efficiency depends on correct sizing and refrigerant charge, not just the label
- ✓Leaky or undersized ducts can erase the gains of a high-SEER2 condenser
- ✓Variable-speed equipment also dehumidifies better during muggy PA summers
PJ MAC HVAC provides free installation estimates and works on all major brands, so homeowners can compare SEER2 options against their actual home and ductwork rather than a brochure number.
