Conventional ducted
Where there is existing duct, or where chases and closets allow new duct to be run, this is usually the best value and the quietest option. High-velocity small-duct

It costs more than conventional duct, moves air at higher velocity so outlet placement matters, and it is less forgiving of a poorly executed installation.
Ductless mini-splits
No duct at all, zoned by nature, and the least invasive. The trade-off is visible indoor heads and one outdoor unit serving them. Frequently the right answer for a converted third floor, an addition, or a single room that has never been comfortable — and sometimes for a whole house where the alternatives would gut it.
Sizing in a masonry house
Thick stone and brick walls behave differently from frame construction. They absorb heat through the day and release it into the evening, which means the peak cooling load arrives later and the building holds temperature longer once conditioned.
This is exactly the situation where oversizing does the most damage. An oversized system satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off before it has removed humidity, and leaves a house that is cold and clammy — in a masonry home that never needed the extra capacity in the first place. We size from a load calculation on the actual building rather than matching whatever was there.
If you have a boiler, keep it
Homeowners adding cooling frequently ask whether they should abandon the radiators and put in a forced-air furnace at the same time, so everything runs on one system. Usually the answer is no. A sound cast iron boiler with hydronic distribution delivers comfortable, even heat, and replacing it with forced air to save on a second system rarely pays back — you would be scrapping working equipment and adding duct load the cooling design does not need.
