Duct that was designed without a fan

A gravity warm-air system moved air on buoyancy alone, so it was built with very large round trunks, gentle rises and few branches โ€” anything restrictive would have stopped it working. When a blower was later bolted onto that geometry the physics changed: air now takes the shortest easy path, the nearest registers take most of it, and the far end of the house lives on what is left. Balancing dampers were never fitted, because a gravity system had no use for them.

Long, narrow floor plans

A city rowhome runs deep front to back with rooms in line, so the branch serving the far end โ€” usually a rear kitchen or a later addition โ€” is both the longest run and the last takeoff from the trunk. That is the room people call about. Before anything gets rebuilt it is worth establishing whether the branch is undersized, obstructed, disconnected inside a cavity, or losing to a shorter branch upstream. Those four have four different fixes and only one is expensive.

What a leaking return pulls in

Return air in these houses is usually taken low, from a masonry basement that is often damp and frequently where the laundry lives. Every leak on the return side is under suction, so it draws from whatever surrounds it โ€” basement air, a wall cavity, the space alongside a flue โ€” and hands that to the blower and then to every room. Sealing the return changes what the system circulates, not just how much arrives.

Bare trunks in a cold basement

Large ducts running the length of an unheated basement shed heat across their whole surface before the air reaches anybody upstairs. In summer those same surfaces can fall below the dew point of humid basement air and sweat, a common and regularly misdiagnosed source of dripping and rust. Insulating those runs is inexpensive against what it returns in both seasons.

When replacement beats repair

Some of these systems cannot be sealed into behaving, because the trunk proportions, the branch sizing or the return capacity were wrong from the moment a fan was introduced into a system that never expected one. Replacing a section โ€” a trunk, a group of branches, the return โ€” is often cheaper than repeated attempts to correct it. We will tell you which you have, and price both where both are genuinely on the table.

My back rooms never get warm but the front of the house is fine.

In a deep rowhome plan that is the classic symptom of a converted gravity system. The nearest branches take the air because nothing was ever fitted to stop them, and the longest run to the rear of the house comes last. The fix might be a damper, a resized branch, or a disconnection inside a cavity, and measurement is what tells them apart.

Why would ductwork make the house smell like the basement?

Because the return side is under suction, so any leak in it pulls air out of whatever surrounds the duct. In these houses the return usually runs through a masonry basement, so basement air, laundry air and anything in a wall cavity gets drawn in and distributed. Sealing the return is what stops it.

Should I repair the ducts or replace them?

It depends whether the problem is leakage or proportion. Leaks, bad joints and missing insulation are repair work and good value. Where the trunk, the branches or the return were sized wrong for a fan-driven system in the first place, sealing only makes an ill-proportioned system quieter, and replacing the wrong section is the better spend.

My basement ducts drip in summer. Is that a leak?

Usually not. It is condensation: the metal surface sits below the dew point of humid basement air, so moisture forms on the outside of the duct exactly as it does on a cold glass. Insulating the run is the remedy, and it is worth doing before the dripping starts rusting the seams.

Do you also clean the ducts you repair?

We do both, but they are separate jobs solving separate problems, and we will tell you honestly whether you need one or both. Cleaning is carried out to NADCA standard using source removal under negative pressure. Repair and sealing address leakage, restriction and airflow.
