Short cycling and the limit switch
A furnace that runs briefly, cuts out while still hot and then restarts is overheating rather than misfiring. The high-limit switch is doing exactly what it exists for, because too little air is crossing the heat exchanger to carry the heat away. A choked filter is the first check, but in these houses the return side is the more common culprit โ undersized, blocked by furniture, or never adequate from the day duct was retrofitted into a home built for radiators. Repeated limit trips are hard on a heat exchanger, so restoring airflow matters far more than replacing the switch that noticed the problem.
High-efficiency furnaces and the water they make
A condensing furnace produces liquid water, and that water has to leave the building. In older basements the arrangement is often improvised: a long run to a floor drain, a pump on a shelf, a dried-out trap. When the path blocks, the pressure switch locks the furnace out, which presents as a control fault and is really a drainage one.
Hard cold also freezes condensate lines running near an exterior wall or an unheated space, giving you a furnace that fails on the coldest night and works perfectly once it thaws.

Venting into old masonry
Plenty of heating equipment around here still vents into a brick chimney built for a different appliance burning a different fuel. Where a more modern furnace has been connected to one of those flues, the exhaust can run cooler than the chimney was designed for, condense inside it and work away at the masonry from within. It is worth looking at the flue while the furnace is open.

That pattern points hard at the flame sensor. The rod sits in the flame and carries a tiny current that proves the burner lit; once oxide coats it the current drops, the board reads no flame and shuts the gas off as a safety response. Cleaning it takes minutes and is the first thing to rule out.

Should I be worried about carbon monoxide?
It is the reason a heat exchanger inspection and a combustion check are part of the visit rather than an extra. A cracked exchanger can put combustion products into the air the blower then distributes through the house. If you suspect it at all, get everyone outside and call from there.
Is an older furnace worth repairing?
Frequently yes. Sensors, ignitors, capacitors and pressure switches are ordinary wear items and replacing them on sound equipment is good value. What changes the answer is a compromised heat exchanger or a pattern of repeated failures across two or three winters, and we will say so directly when that is what we find.
